For many parents the start of the school year is here or will be quickly approaching in the next couple of weeks. With that, there is the usual strain of preparing for the school year and having children get acclimated to what will be coming up for the year. This year will be a different school year in many regards-hopefully it will be good and better than expected.

As we move forward with the next several months of the year, it will be important that in addition to doing the different strategic administrative activities to run our home and families well, we take time for ourselves to make sure we are well. That can of course include different kinds of things, but at minimum it requires some quiet time to check in mentally, to make sure we assess how we are feeling, what’s on our mind, and what we need to do for ourselves to have our needs met. The old adage-put your mask on first before you put the mask on for others, it is still relevant. We also need to make sure that we are being filled out in order to give in the ways that we are expected to do.

For me being filled out includes quiet time to de-stress, time to watch my shows I enjoy, listening in to things that motivate, encourage, or inspire me, going for a walk, taking in the scenery while being in nature, connecting with others, and probably most helpfully being quiet to hear what God is trying to teach me. When I aim to understand what God is teaching me, it allows me to think differently about the things I’m experiencing. Quiet time with God, whether praying quietly at home in the morning time, by a lake as I enjoy the view, or taking a walk to pray allows me to get the things on my mind, off my chest, and quiet time being still listening to God, allows me to hear what He wants to teach me. Romans 12:1-2 says Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. New International Version Bible.

What are some things that you anticipate may be a challenge for you, and what do you think you can try doing to be or stay centered amidst the upcoming challenges?
