Self-care is important
Living in NYC means living in constant motion. When we are in constant motion, it becomes difficult to listen to our bodies. If we cannot hear our bodies, we will miss important cues such as hunger, sleep deprivation, aches & pains, stress, or anxiety. So, how do we develop a “new normal”?
Self-care is crucial to our mental health. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. If we are mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually drained this can result in high levels of stress, anxiety and/or depression. However, “When we are regularly taking care of ourselves, we are better able to react to the things that go on in our lives.”
Self-care includes taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, taking care of yourself can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact.
Your needs change
Self-care does not look the same for everyone, so it is important that you listen to your body’s cues, identify where “it hurts”, and create a plan of care. Keep in mind that what looks like care for you today, may not look like care for you tomorrow, but with intentional practice of taking action to preserve or improve your health, you can experience a greater sense of wellbeing and happiness.
What does self care look like?
“Emotional self-care means saying “no” to things that cause unnecessary stress, giving
yourself permission to take a “pause”, or setting up a coffee date with a friend”.
“Spiritual self-care can include attending a religious service, praise and worship, reading
your bible, or keeping a gratitude journal”.
“Physical self-care includes prioritizing sleep, adopting an exercise routine that you can
stick with, and choosing healthy and nourishing foods for your body”.
